The automotive industry, concentrated in the Cassino area around the former FIAT plant (now Stellantis), is one of Lazio’s key areas of specialization. It ranks 6th in Italy for number of employees in the sector—29,000 workers—and 5th for number of companies, totaling nearly 8,000.

The metalworking and mechanical engineering sector in Lazio includes hundreds of small and medium-sized enterprises specializing in intermediate processing and components manufacturing. Many of these companies have undergone partial transformation through Industry 4.0 innovations.

Although exports have declined in recent years, vehicles remain one of the region’s main export categories, with a total value of €1.5 billion.
To complete the transition, significant investment is required in research, development, innovation, and human capital. The government has allocated €2.5 billion in tax credits and has initiated the creation of a European fund to incentivize demand for sustainable—though not necessarily electric—vehicles.
This represents a major opportunity for the many research centers and universities in Lazio currently focusing on sustainable mobility, such as the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, La Sapienza with its Sustainable Mobility Hub, Roma Tre University, University of Tor Vergata, University of Tuscia, ENEA with the Casaccia Electric Mobility Lab, and the CNR’s Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research.
